July’s Girl: Madeline von Froomer
How did you get where you are?
Mostly trial and error.
Where do you find inspiration?
All of cultural and artistic history and the natural world and my own body. I think I mostly imagine what I want to exist in the world that doesn’t already and go from there.
What are you wearing in the photo?
Proenza Schouler cotton voile button down, vintage denim cutoffs (they used to be a pair of Diesel jeans I bought at 19 when I thought that was cool), gold Cape clogs. I’m obsessed with my gold Swedish clogs right now. And a blue Reece Hudson duffle bag.
Who are your designers to watch right now?
I think Phoebe Philo and Sarah Burton are creative geniuses. I was searching vaporware for awhile but now I’m over it. Now I’m looking Yoruba masquerades for ancestor worship. They are so beautiful.
Magazines or website?
Websites unless I’m on an airplane.
What are you currently reading?
I’m researching a writing project now, so I’m reading mostly female authors for that: Rachel Kushner’s Flamethrowers, Chris Kraus’s Aliens and Anorexia, Camille Paglia’s Sexual Personae.
What / who do you lust for?
Fame, wealth, connection, subtle BDSM, really nice bathtubs.
What makes the perfect bag?
The perfect bag has to be a beautiful object, without being tacky or overtly recognizable. And it has to be exceptionally functional: easy to open and close, inside pockets, able to be work in different ways on the body, and relatively safe to leave open all of the time. Why do I hate zipping bags?
